Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of high school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
